Dublin Community Growers are pleased to announce the launch of the Dublin Harvest Festival 2013.

Last September saw the inauguration of the first Dublin Harvest Festival. This free community festival was held in Wolfe Tone Park, Dublin 1, on Saturday the 29th September 2012. Gardeners from all over the city brought produce to donate on the day for distribution in the Food Hub Marquee. Many individuals and community groups participated in the event, both in its organisation, by volunteering to help out on the day, and by donating produce. Over 300 bags of locally grown produce were handed out to the public on the day.
The day went flawlessly which is quite an achievement for a first night show! This is even more impressive as it was delivered by unpaid volunteers. The desire, support, and appetite to see a follow up Harvest Festival event for 2013 has been universal, and so we are delighted to be able to announce the launch of the 2013 Dublin Harvest Festival. This launch is in advance of the actual Harvest Festival, which is scheduled for September 2013. The launch will be held within the Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2, at 8 pm on Thursday the 7th March 2013.

The launch of the 2013 Dublin Harvest Festival is an opportunity to thank volunteers, supporters, and sponsors alike, while we will also be promoting the many interconnected benefits of this celebration of community produce and cooperation that is the Dublin Harvest Festival.

A seed bomb workshop for kids: This will see us getting kids to make their own seed bombs by mixing wild flower seeds with clay, compost/soil, and water. The resulting seed bombs can then be taken home, dried, and then thrown at waste patches of ground around the city … where wild flowers will then grow.We will also be able to deliver information on biodiversity within the city, wildflowers, and the importance of the pollinating insects which are supported by native wild flowers.

Herb Propagation Workshop for Kids and Adults: These are taken from immature shoot tips. They can be rooted at any time of year in warm conditions. This is suitable for Lemon Balm and Mint plants. Sever a non flowering shoot just beneath a node (using hands … no tools). If flower buds are present pinch them out (Otherwise all energy goes into flowering instead of roots). Cuttings will be planted into plastic pots with growing media for people to take home.

Mustard Seed Workshop for kids: This will involve getting children to sprinkle mustard seed upon wet tissue within aluminium food trays. These they will take home to keep moist on a window sill. Over the coming days the Mustard Seed will sprout and provide tasty shoots for sandwiches. Ideal for soil adverse parents/children!
