Mud Island Community Garden Group has been meeting since September 2009. We signed a license agreement with Dublin City Council in October 2011 and have permission to build a community garden on part of the derelict site at Newcomen Court, North Strand, Dublin 3. The garden has received grants from An Taisce’s Green Communities, Croke Park Community Fund, Community Growers Fund and Agenda 21. Membership is open to anyone living in the North Strand/Ballybough area. The garden is worked collectively and the produce shared. New members are always welcome.
Origins of our name: Up until the middle of the last century, westward of the North Strand, between Nottingham Street and Newcomen Bridge, and extending as far as Ballybough Road, was a locality of evil repute in former times, known as Mud Island. It was inhabited by a gang of smugglers, highwaymen, and desperadoes of every description. Today, it’s the site of
our community garden!
Where: Newcomen Court, Newcomen Avenue, North Strand Dublin 3.
When: Saturdays 2 to 5 pm and some weekdays during Spring/Summer months – check with a committee member.
