Sankalpa Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) garden programme.
The Sankalpa Social and Therapeutic Horticulture programme commenced work in September 2011. Currently, the programme consists of a group of seven participants who meet on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 1.30pm at St. Kevin’s National School Barry Avenue, Finglas West, Dublin 11.
The programme is dedicated to reducing the recidivism rate by offering men and women who are seeking support to detox off methadone an innovative reintegration programme using Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) as a tool to prepare them for sustainable recovery.
Since September 2011, the Garden of Growth has grown to encompass an educational setting in Finglas West that includes a classroom, a tool shed and 600 meters squared of landscaped and productive garden, designed and built by members.
The Sankalpa STH Programme provides valuable, practical activities in horticulture. Hands-on experience includes tilling the soil, planting crops and tending the fruit and vegetables and also the design and construction of garden fixtures (arches, containers, planters, composter, etc.).
The men and women who participate in the Garden of Growth are learning more than just professional horticulture: they’re receiving vital training in the life skills needed to turn their lives in a new, positive direction.
